McCarthy
were something
that was truly unique and wonderful, something
you really should investigate if youıre fond of things like wit, melody,
truth and beauty in your pop music.
"McCarthy
and Wolfhounds shone
through.
"McCarthy
are four weedy
youths with a magnificent driving sound. The Buzzcocks

In the
latter
part of the '80s Pop world you couldn't get much
more sharply, smartly political than McCarthy. With connections to the
Revolutionary Communist Party and a love of the Pet Shop Boys, McCarthy
encapsulated the ironies and contradictions of creating left-wing sympathetic
Pop product, and as such cast a peculiar shadow on the schemes of Independent
Pop. Agit-Pop without the slogans or dogma, McCarthy wrote songs that
were avuncular and filled with a magically skewed beauty; wrote songs
from strange points of view; wrote songs that made you think. McCarthy have been one of our favorite U.K. groups for several years, though their releases were always hard to find here in the States, and all are now out of print. Now that guitarist Tim Gane has formed STEREOLAB and is producing some of the most intriguingly brilliant music on the planet, we're doubly pleased to have been able to acquire a supply of MC CARTHY titles from a cut-out dealer. These are all the original import releases on Midnight Music (who went bankrupt last year) and are all in limited supply These are highly recommended for fans of THE DENTISTS as quite often singer Malcolm Eden reminds us of early Mick Murphy without the harmonies. MC CARTHY produced some of the most infectious jangle pop on the left side of the water, but instead of singing about love and things like that they managed to pull off some of the most politically sarcastic lyrics ever. His wit along with the infectious tunes make for a very unusual combination. By their third and last LP they had managed to create a masterpiece, one of our top ten favorite albums of all time TRAVIS
EMMITT McCarthy's
sound evolved
from
the anxious, generic indie strummings of 'Should
The Bible Be Banned?' into a superior heaven of honed pop hooks, bolstered
by the sprinkling of analogue synths and Ms Sadierıs vocals. This later
period is tiresomely dismissed by purists of the "I preferred the earlier
stuff" school. But theyıre wrong and Iım right. Obviously.
Nell'era
del ritorno alla
melodia dopo la sbornia punk-rock, si misero in
luce and i McCarthy di Malcom Eden (canto) e Tim Gane (chitarra). In Purgatory
(1985) e Red Sleeping Beauty (1987) presentarono un gruppo di folk-rock
con venature gotiche alla Joy Division e testi polemici. La stampa annuncio`
subito la "next big thing" di turno, che venne "pompata" attraverso la
solita sequenza di singoli da classifica (Frans Hals e Well Of Loneliness,
in seguito raccolti su A La Guillotine). I Am The Wallet (September, 1987)
e` in realta` l'ennesimo disco di ballate melense e scontate alla Smiths.
Dopo i singoli Should The Bible Be Banned e This Nelson Rockefeller, usci`
un album ancor piu` commerciale, The Enraged Will Inherit The Earth (Midnight,
1989), contenente Boy Meets Girl So What, forse il loro capolavoro.
